Lotus Lily Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine revolves primarily around the concept and balance of Yin and Yang. In practice Yin and Yang relate to excesses and deficiencies in the body manifesting as acute or chronic illness. The flow of qi or life-force is impeded and an absence of well-being ensues which can lead to sickness and disease.

TCM practitioners work by restoring a person to a more harmonious level within their body, mind and spirit and assisting the body to heal itself. Ill-health can develop either through external factors or internal disharmony or both. Emotions play a large part in the onset of disease according to TCM and this connection is addressed in various ways via cupping, spooning, acupuncture and herbal medicine, as well as dietary and exercise therapy and counselling.

TCM via acupuncture and herbal medicine works by:-

  • reducing excesses/tonifying or building deficiencies
  • supporting organs optimal function
  • clearing blockages of qi in meridians and stagnation of blood that can cause pain
  • calming the shen (mind/spirit)

Cupping/spooning and Chinese massage assist by moving stagnation in the body which can be either areas of blocked qi or blood giving rise to pain, stiffness and lowered vitality. By increasing circulation in the back and deeper organs, blood flows more freely, thereby helping
to rid the body of waste products and assisting the lymphatic system.

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into various points along the meridians. The 12 meridians relate to the Yin/Yang organs and are dispersed all over the body. Acupuncture unlocks qi, releases blockages/pain and restores balance. Endorphins are said to be released at an
acupuncture session thereby bringing about a sense of well-being and calm.

Herbal medicine makes up a large component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In China herbs are considered gifts of nature. They are not used to 'fight' the disease directly, but to enhance the body's natural healing. Over the centuries Chinese doctors have studied, researched and used herbs for medicine which include plants, minerals and some animal products. These days there are stricter controls in place for the use of endangered species. Plant based herbs make up the biggest component of herbal medicine and are the most widely used in the majority of formulae.  Raw herbs require cooking, while powders and granules are a more convenient way to ingest herbs. Granula formulae imported into Aus. from China or Taiwan are manufactured under strict quality assurance conditions. Toxic herbs are never prescribed in pregnancy or fertility cases.

Areas of speciality

Fertility
TCM is well known for its efficacy in treating infertility. Problems with attaining a stable pregnancy are seen within the context of Yin/Yang balance of a woman's body, but with a particular focus on her Kidney qi, essence and lifestyle. Acupuncture is utilised in helping to achieve and maintain a healthy pregnancy and delivery- from early nausea, prevention of recurrent miscarriage to a reduction in pain and duration of labour or turning of breech presentation.

In IVF cases, acupuncture is used to support and maximise the success of the procedure both close to the embryo transfer and then again soon after.   Herbal medicine is prescribed for the 3month pregnancy preparation, but is stopped once IVF drug regime begins until the egg retrieval or OPU (Oocyte Pick Up)
