Melbourne Meditation Centre
The Melbourne Meditation Centre runs regular meditation classes on thursday evenings at Camberwell Health and Healing.
Our focus is on teaching meditation as a simple, practical skill. Rather than concentrating on one technique we'll teach you the key principles which apply to all meditations. This allows you to integrate meditation naturally into your daily life - wherever and whenever you are - so that you can use it when you most need it.
On our courses you'll develop an understanding of how and why meditation works and the ability to adapt it to your own lifestyle, temperament and learning style. You'll be presented with a range of techniques, including many that don't require you to sit and others that only take a minute or two to do. Meditation practiced this way is surprisingly easy and enjoyable. Find out why meditation is such a useful skill to learn and what else to expect on our courses.
What is meditation?
Meditation is a word used to describe an extraordinary variety of techniques and can be practised for an equally wide variety of purposes. Most commonly though, it is a quiet, introspective practice in which you allow the body to relax and the mind to become calm.
Benefits
People meditate for many reasons. Some of the most common include, to:
relax, de-stress and fall asleep
- improve or maintain good health
- remain calm and balanced throughout the day
- develop greater awareness
- stimulate creative thinking
- cope better with pain and sadness
- find happiness, beauty and meaning
What can be treated through meditation?
Studies over the last few decades confirm that meditation is a particularly useful treatment for:
- insomnia
- anxiety and depression
- reducing blood pressure
- stress and stress related illnesses
- cardiovascular disease
- digestive problems
- improving and maintaining immune system function
How it works
Meditation works by triggering the bodies relaxation response and its natural tendencies for rest, repair and rejuvenation. By learning how and where to direct attention, the meditator can effectively regulate key systems (respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, immune etc.) to ensure that both body and mind can quickly return to states of homeostasis, or balance. These are simple skills that everyone can learn, but that few people have consciously developed.
What to expect in a session
On our meditation courses you will learn about what meditation is and how it works, and will also be introduced to a wide variety of meditation techniques. On each session there will be a combination of theory, practice and discussion / question time.
You will learn how to integrate meditation into your day by using ‘spot’ meditations — which can be done in as little as 20 seconds and allow you to destress in any situation, including while at work. You’ll also develop the capacity to use longer sitting practices in order to relax deeply.
You work with the meditations that appeal to you and they can all be easily tailored to meet your particular needs.
Session length
Sessions are of 90 minutes duration and run over 6 consecutive weeks.

About Matthew
Matthew Young is the founder and director of the Melbourne Meditation Centre. He has been teaching meditation since 2002 and has adopted a very practical, down-to-earth style which draws on both traditional and contemporary approaches. Never tied to a particular tradition, he presents meditation as a simple skill which can be customised to the individual and integrated into even the busiest of lifestyles.
Matthew enjoys demystifying meditation; offering his students clear explanations of what meditation is and how it works, so that they can leave a course not just with a selection of useful tools and strategies, but also a good understanding of the process and how to apply it.
Drawing on his own experience as a meditator and teacher and also on recent discoveries in neuroscience Matthew presents meditation as a simple skill free of extraneous beliefs, jargon or dogma.
Matthew has studied and practiced a wide variety of meditation techniques and traditions, both eastern and western, ancient and modern. He doesn't belong to any particular tradition and doesn't think of anyone as his teacher. Instead he has a number of people he considers 'meditation consultants', people who helped him to fit one or more pieces of the jigsaw together. Many people have influenced him in this way, and how he thinks, practises and teaches meditation owes much to them. Included in these are Eric Harrison, Lorin Roche, Gregory Kramer, Graham Williams and Jason Siff, as well as many others, too numerous to mention.
Testimonials
I have recently completed the basic introduction training and felt compelled to contact you and thank you for improving my quality of life. I truly found that the body focus and spot meditations were of great benefit to my working life and I use them nearly every day. I hope to continue to be involved in the future.
Many thanks, PB
Thanks for a great course and for giving me such effective meditation techniques. I really enjoyed the sessions and the way you conducted them. Perfect time of the day to go home feeling exceptionally refreshed and human.
Cheers, CB
I came along to your first (or one of your first?) meditation classes in Elwood, about 3 or 4 years ago. I feel drawn to write to you after recieving the latest newsletter which, like all previous versions, I welcome into my inbox. I'm living in the UK now, but continue to feel the benefit of that initial course, it has really given me a great tool for slowing myself down and, importantly, recognising when I need to do so. So, this is just to say THANKS, you have really made a difference.
